20 Days of Christmas Kindness
Take on the 20 Days of Christmas Kindness challenge!
Tis the season of busy busy busy! But it’s also the time of the year to think of others who might not have it as good as you do. Many families were severely impacted by hurricane Ida, have lost loved ones to Covid-19, have been let go from their jobs or are suffering (or taking care of someone who is suffering) with a physical or mental illness. The holidays aren’t a happy time for everybody even tho things may “look” that way from the outside.
The stress of holiday preparations, tight budgets and anticipating family get-togethers can easily trigger anxiety. Try to take notice of what’s really happening in your world. Young, old, rich and poor, we all have the ability to lend a hand, show support and make someone else’s day special. On these last days of the year, commit to 20 acts of kindness. Or if you’re so inspired, go for 21, 26, or wherever your heart leads you. 🙂
Here are a few ideas to get you started…
- Recognize the difficult year our front line workers have had and let the grocery store clerk keep the change, buy a pretty poinsettia for your doctor’s office or make a donation to the fire company.
- Make treats for your mail carrier, newspaper carrier and trash hauler.
- Pay for the next person in line at the drive-thru.
- Help your child write a heart-felt thank-you note to their teacher.
- Call a friend or relative you’ve been thinking about but can never find time for.
- Clean out coat closets and donate jackets, hats, mittens, and boots to a local shelter.
- Buy a cup of coffee for a security guard or police officer standing outside on a cold day.
- Take bags of food and treats to a local animal shelter and spend the day showing love to the animals.
- Make dinner for a family who could use a break.
- Help your child write a note and wrap a gift for a young boy or girl who will spend Christmas in the hospital this year.
- Organize a donation of games, books, and supplies to someone serving overseas.
- Forgive someone or ask for forgiveness.
- Leave a tip twice the cost of your meal for your waiter/waitress.
- Go visit your parents.
- Make soup for your neighbor on a cold day.
- Hold open doors for people.
- Compliment a stranger.
- Pick up litter at a local park or trail.
- Teach your children empathy by expressing gratitude every nite before bed time.
- Be kind to yourself!
Bottom Line:
The truth is when you do good, you feel good. Open your heart and your world to something bigger than yourself. Treat each person you meet with kindness and be the change you wish to see in others.
Take these last 20 days of 2021 to spread Christmas kindness to your family, friends and the strangers around you. You may find the best holiday present you get this year is the one you give away!
